Just bought The Witcher 3!!!! When should I download the free DLC and does it break the game?

Hell yes, just got this today finally and can't wait to play. My question is, when should I download the free dlc? Should I beat the game first or is it safe to get it at the start? Will having any break the game by being super strong or defeat the purpose of getting upgrades as I play?
