I can't get through The Witcher one.

I've played a bit of witcher 3 at a friend's place and immediately loved it. But I thought, I have to start with the first game. I started playing The Witcher 1 and I like it, but I feel the combat is holding me back. Should I start playing 2, or just start playing 3?
