Witcher 3 seems too difficult? Tell me what I'm doing wrong. [Potential spoilers]

I'm level 5 trying to take on a level 6 story mission and I cannot stop dying. I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to getting better armor or weapons, general alchemy, or crafting. I'm pretty bad at this game, admittedly. Trying to finish the fight with the Golem when you're looking for the Mage seems impossible to me at the moment. If I get hit about twice by the Golem I'm dead, and I'm doing around 25 damage a hit to him with my silver sword. I'm really trying to enjoy this game but the difficulty (or maybe general learning curve) is keeping me from doing so.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
