Is it just me or is the first ~10 levels of Death March really, really difficult?

i don't know, it seems nigh impossible (obviously it's not though). I keep getting 3-4 shot by drowners at lvl 5. On my first save I switched to death march in the middle of the run, and it wasen't that difficult at all. So is the first levels of death march just that difficult?
